The Best Cold Plunge Tubs With Chillers

A chiller is what turns plunging from an ice-buying errand into a habit. Four ways to buy the cold, ranked by how much water you need it to hold.

Buy the AS ColdPlunge 1/3 HP chiller and 100-gallon tub bundle. It is the cheapest matched tub-and-chiller set we track, the fittings and the volume already suit each other, and it is for the person plunging several times a week who is tired of buying ice. If you want one appliance that lives outdoors all year with nothing to connect, the JUGRFIT 121 has the chiller and the filtration built into the tub. If you want enough water to sit with your shoulders under and your legs out, the 1 HP and 216-gallon bundle is the pool-scale option. And if you already own a chiller-compatible tub, do not rebuy the shell — the standalone 1/3 HP chiller is the cheaper half of the job.

Why the chiller is the decision, not the tub

A cold plunge tub is a vessel. Any insulated tub with a lid holds cold water; what varies is where the cold comes from. On bagged ice, a plunge costs you a supermarket trip two or three times a week and roughly ten minutes of hauling per session, and the honest truth of this category is that the ice run — not the cold — is what ends most people's habit in month three. A chiller replaces that errand with a compressor and an outlet.

That is why this page is organized around the cooling rather than the shell. Three questions decide it:

  • How much water? Capacity sets the compressor you need. A 1/3 HP unit is sized for roughly 80-100 gallons; past about 150 gallons, or in a hot climate, you want 1 HP. Buy the chiller for the tub, not the other way round.
  • Matched, integrated, or retrofit? A matched bundle removes the fittings gamble. An integrated unit removes the second appliance. A retrofit is the cheapest route if the tub is already in your yard — provided the listing publishes chiller compatibility.
  • Where will the compressor live? Level ground, clear of leaves, within reach of an outdoor-rated outlet, and winterized in a freezing climate. This is the constraint people discover after delivery.

For set points and session length, our cold plunge temperature guide has the numbers — the classic immersion study comparing responses across water temperatures is the reason we treat the low 50s and the high 30s as genuinely different activities rather than points on a dial.

How the four compare

These are published figures from the listings, not measurements of ours — we have not put a thermocouple in anybody's tub, and our methodology says so plainly.

Two rows deserve a second look. The JUGRFIT publishes neither a set-point floor nor a pull-down rate, so how cold it holds in July is not a number you can check before buying — and because the chiller is integrated, one failure takes the whole unit rather than one replaceable box. And the standalone chiller currently costs about what the brand's own chiller-and-tub bundle does, which makes it a sensible buy only if the tub is already yours.

Pros

  • A chiller ends the single biggest reason people stop plunging: the cost and hassle of buying bags of ice several times a week
  • Bought as a matched set, so the fittings, hose sizes and tub volume already suit each other
  • Holds the water cold between sessions, which is what makes a sauna-and-plunge routine sustainable rather than an occasional event

Cons

  • Several times the price of a bare tub, and the chiller needs its own outdoor-rated outlet within reach of the plunge
  • A chiller is a compressor — one more appliance to site level, keep clear of debris and winterize

Don't buy this if…

…you plunge once or twice a week. At that cadence bagged ice in a plain tub is cheaper, and there is nothing to maintain.

Pros

  • Chiller and filtration are integrated rather than bolted on, so there is no fittings gamble and no second appliance to find a spot for
  • Listed as weatherproof, which is what you need if the plunge will sit beside an outdoor sauna through a whole year instead of being packed away each autumn
  • 121 gallons is enough for full seated submersion for one adult without committing you to a 200-gallon water change

Cons

  • The most expensive thing on this page by some distance, and an integrated chiller means one failure takes the whole unit out rather than one replaceable component
  • The listing does not publish a set-point floor or a pull-down rate, so how cold it holds in a hot climate is not a number you can check before buying
  • Stock on this listing runs thin — it has repeatedly shown only a handful of units available, so it is not a dependable buy-today pick

Don't buy this if…

…you want the cheapest route to cold water. The same money buys a very good chiller plus a very good tub with capacity to spare.

Pros

  • 216 gallons is the capacity that stops a plunge feeling like a bucket — enough water to sit with your shoulders under and your legs out, which is what most tubs get wrong
  • A 1 HP compressor is a real step up from the 1/3 HP units that dominate this category, and it is the size you want once a tub holds more than about 150 gallons or lives somewhere hot
  • Pump and filtration come with it, so the water gets circulated and strained rather than dumped and refilled every few days — that is the main difference between a plunge pool and a plunge tub

Cons

  • It is still a fabric tub, not a hard shell: pool-scale water, tub-scale construction, so treat the shell as multi-season gear
  • 216 gallons in one place is roughly 1,800 pounds of water. On a deck or an upper floor that is a structural question, not a decorating one
  • The chiller is a compressor — it needs a level, debris-free spot, an outdoor-rated outlet within reach, and winterizing in a freezing climate

Don't buy this if…

…you plunge once or twice a week. At that cadence a plain covered tub and bagged ice costs a fraction of this and has nothing to maintain.

Pros

  • Retrofits a chiller-compatible tub you already own, so you aren't rebuying the shell to be rid of the ice runs
  • Ships complete — circulation pump, reusable metal mesh filter, insulated hoses, quick-connect fittings and a submersible pump for bathtub use
  • It connects to the 1/2in inlet and outlet ports the brand's own tubs use, which takes the fittings gamble out of a retrofit

Cons

  • It currently costs roughly what the brand's chiller-and-tub bundle does, so it only makes sense if you already own the tub
  • Rated to 79 gallons, so a bigger tub than that wants a bigger compressor — and it needs a protected, level spot with an outdoor-rated outlet in reach

Don't buy this if…

…you don't own a tub yet. The matched chiller-and-tub bundle avoids a fittings mismatch and usually lands cheaper than the two bought separately.

What to check before you buy

  • Horsepower against gallons, in your climate. A 1/3 HP compressor rated to 79 gallons will struggle to hold a 150-gallon tub at a low set point through a hot summer. If the listing publishes a gallon rating, treat it as a ceiling rather than a target. Our cold plunge chiller ranking compares the compressors on their own, including BTU-per-hour ratings where brands publish them.
  • The outlet, and who installs it. A chiller is an appliance outdoors near water. That means a properly protected outdoor-rated circuit — work for an electrician under NFPA 70 and your local amendments — not an extension lead run out of a window.
  • Water care. Chilled water sits for weeks instead of being dumped after every session, which changes the job from hauling to housekeeping. Filtration, circulation and a lid are what keep it usable; the CDC's healthy-swimming basics are the right mental model for a tub several people share.
  • Weight, if it is not on the ground. 216 gallons is roughly 1,800 pounds of water. On a deck or an upper floor that is a structural question, not a decorating one.
  • The running cost. A chiller is a compressor cycling to hold a set point, so the bill scales with ambient heat, insulation and how religiously you use the lid. At the residential rates published by the EIA it is the cost of a small fridge rather than a hot tub — and an insulated lid is the single cheapest thing you can do about it.

Bundle, all-in-one or retrofit

Buy the matched bundle if you are starting from nothing. Hose sizes, fittings and tub volume already agree, which removes the one failure mode that makes people return chillers. It is also the cheapest complete route to cold-on-demand we track.

Buy the all-in-one if the plunge has to live outdoors permanently and look like one object. The JUGRFIT is the most expensive thing on this page and the easiest to set up: no fittings, no second appliance to site. Accept the integrated-failure risk and the undisclosed set point as the price of that simplicity.

Buy the standalone chiller only if you already own a tub that publishes chiller ports. Retrofitting the tub we rank first for sauna pairing is a legitimate two-stage plan: ice this season, a chiller next, same shell. What makes it fail is a tub with no published ports and a guess about hose diameters.

Buy neither yet if you plunge once or twice a week. At that cadence bagged ice in a covered tub is cheaper than any of this and has nothing to maintain — start with a beginner tub and let the habit prove itself first. Our DIY cold plunge guide is the cheapest version of all.

What the cold is actually doing

Worth keeping in proportion while you spend this much money. The 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of cold water immersion found effects on some wellbeing and health outcomes with small trial sizes and substantial heterogeneity — a real literature with real limits, not a settled case. We go through it honestly in cold plunge benefits. A chiller buys you consistency and convenience, which is the thing most likely to make any of it stick; it does not buy a bigger effect per session.

If the plunge is going next to a sauna — which is how most of our readers use one — the Finnish practice of alternating hot and cold is the tradition behind it, and our sauna and cold plunge combo guide covers siting both halves together.

How we picked

We do not run a testing lab

We researched published manufacturer specifications, listing data and aggregated owner reviews, then scored each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — they are not measurements we took, because we don't have a lab and we're not going to pretend we do. Prices come live from the Amazon Creators API; where a spec came from a manufacturer we say so and link it in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best cold plunge tub with a chiller?
The AS ColdPlunge 1/3 HP chiller and 100-gallon tub bundle, for most buyers: the cheapest matched set we track, with the pump included and the fittings already suited to the tub. Step up to the 1 HP and 216-gallon bundle if you want pool-scale water, or the JUGRFIT 121 if you want one integrated weatherproof unit.
Is a cold plunge chiller worth it?
If you plunge three or more times a week, yes — the chiller pays for itself in ice you stop buying and, more importantly, in sessions you stop skipping. At once or twice a week, a covered tub and bagged ice is cheaper and has nothing to maintain.
What size chiller do I need for a cold plunge?
Match horsepower to gallons and climate. A 1/3 HP unit suits roughly 80-100 gallons in a temperate climate; past about 150 gallons, or anywhere with hot summers, 1 HP is the honest size. Published gallon ratings are ceilings, not targets, so size up if your tub sits in the sun.
Can you add a chiller to a cold plunge tub you already own?
Yes, if the tub publishes chiller compatibility or inlet and outlet ports. The standalone 1/3 HP chiller here ships with the pump, filter, insulated hoses and quick-connect fittings for exactly that job. Without published ports you are guessing at hose diameters, which is how retrofits fail.
How much does a cold plunge chiller cost to run?
It behaves like a small fridge that works harder in summer: the compressor cycles to hold your set point, so the bill scales with ambient temperature, tub insulation and lid discipline. Keeping the insulated lid on between sessions is the single biggest lever you have.
Do cold plunge chillers filter the water too?
Most include a pump and a basic filter, and some add ozone or cartridge filtration. That matters more than it sounds: once the water is chilled you keep it for weeks rather than dumping it, so circulation and filtration are what make it pleasant to get into on day twenty.
