How much does a home sauna cost to run?
It depends on the heater's kW draw, how long you run it, and your electricity rate. A 2-person infrared cabin (~1.7kW) costs on the order of $0.20-$0.25 for a 40-minute session at the U.S. average rate; a 6-9kW traditional stove costs more. We show the full math on our running-cost guide.
Is an infrared or traditional sauna better?
Infrared is easier and cheaper: it plugs into a standard outlet, runs cooler (120-140F) and costs less per session. Traditional gives you the real hot, humid loyly experience but needs 240V wiring and ventilation. See infrared vs traditional.
Do home saunas need special wiring?
Most 1-2 person infrared cabins and portable saunas run on a standard 120V outlet. Larger infrared cabins, full-spectrum models, and all traditional rock-stove saunas usually need a dedicated 240V circuit and an electrician. Always check the listing's electrical spec.
What temperature should a home sauna be?
Traditional Finnish saunas run about 150-195F; infrared cabins run cooler at roughly 120-140F because they heat the body directly. More on our sauna temperature guide.
Are home saunas worth it?
If you'll use it regularly, yes — the running cost is modest and the routine is genuinely pleasant, with reasonable cardiovascular evidence behind it. If you're unsure, a portable sauna is a low-risk way to find out before committing to a cabin.
What size infrared sauna should I buy?
For most people a 2-person cabinis the sweet spot — room for two, still on a standard outlet. Buy the size you'll actually fill; 3-4 person cabins mean a 240V circuit and heating empty bench.
What size sauna heater do I need?

Is full spectrum infrared worth it over far infrared?

Are infrared saunas safe in terms of EMF?
Modern low-EMF carbon-panel cabins keep electromagnetic fields low, and no strong evidence links sauna-level EMF to harm. Prefer a cabin that publishes an actual milligauss figure — our EMF explainer covers what the numbers mean.
Cedar or hemlock for a sauna?
Hemlock is the budget-to-mid default; red cedar is the premium upgrade — aromatic and naturally rot-resistant, which matters most for outdoor barrels. Cedar is a comfort and longevity upgrade, not a performance one.
Electric or wood-burning sauna heater?

Do sauna blankets actually work?
Yes, for what they are — an infrared blanket you lie inside warms the body and makes you sweat. It's not a full sauna room, but it's compact and travels. See our best sauna blankets.
How often should you use a sauna?
The cardiovascular research most often cited (Finnish cohort data) associates the biggest benefits with 4-7 sessions a week, but even a couple of sessions is worthwhile. Start gradually — more in our sauna benefits guide.
How much does a home sauna cost to buy?

Sauna or steam room — what's the difference?
A sauna is dry heat (low humidity, higher temperature); a steam room is wet heat (near 100% humidity, lower temperature). They feel very different — compared on our sauna vs steam room guide.
Do you actually test the saunas you recommend?
No — and we say so plainly. We don't run a testing lab. We compile published specifications, compute the running cost, cite our sources, and score against a published rubric. We'd rather tell you exactly what we did than pretend to a lab we don't have.
