Buy the Natural Textile "Sauna Captain" wool felt cap— it's the hat sauna regulars actually reach for. Real wool felt, honest insulation, and it costs about the same as a couple of coffees. If the novelty shape isn't your style, the SØND merino beanie is the understated upgrade.

Why a wool hat is the one accessory worth the fuss

In a hot traditional sauna the air near your head can sit at 180-200F, and your scalp and ears heat faster than the rest of you. A wool hat traps a layer of still air around your head so it doesn't cook while your core is still warming through — which is exactly what lets people sit a full session without that light-headed, "my ears are burning" feeling. It isn't vanity or folklore; it's the same reason wool works in a winter coat, pointed at the one part of you that overheats first.

The catch: a hat earns its keep in hotsaunas. At 180F+ it's genuinely useful. In a 130F infrared cabin — where the air is far cooler and it's your body, not the room, being heated — there's little to protect your head from, so most infrared owners can skip it. Our sauna temperature guide shows where your setup lands.

Wool felt vs merino

Almost every good sauna hat is wool, because wool insulates even when damp and shrugs off heat that would melt a synthetic. The real choice is felt vs merino. Wool felt is pressed, dense and hard-wearing — the classic thick cap (our Natural Textile and Northwood picks), cheap and effective. Merinois a finer, softer fiber knitted into a beanie (the SØND); it's less scratchy against a sweaty forehead and looks more like a normal hat, for a bit more money. Both insulate; merino is a comfort upgrade, not a performance one.

How to choose — and care for — a sauna hat

Get the fit roughly right

Most sauna hats are sold one-size and run generous on purpose — you want the hat to sit down over your ears, not perch on top. A slightly loose felt cap is normal and fine; the trapped air is doing the work, so it doesn't need to be snug like a winter beanie.

Felt for durability, merino for comfort

If you sauna hot and often and want something you'll never think about, buy plain wool felt — the Natural Textile or the value Northwood. If a scratchy brow bothers you, or you want a hat that doesn't announce itself, pay up for the SØND merino. The budget banya cap and the Fdit beanie both work; they're just less consistent, being unbranded or basic.

Hand wash, never machine dry

Wool felts further if you agitate it in hot water, so treat a sauna hat like any wool garment: rinse in cool water with a little mild soap, press — don't wring — the water out, reshape it by hand, and let it air dry away from direct heat. A hang loop (on the Northwood and Fdit) makes drying it on the sauna wall easy. Do that and a cheap hat lasts years; put it through a hot machine cycle and it'll shrink to a coaster.

How we picked

We do not run a testing lab

We researched published manufacturer specifications, listing data and aggregated owner reviews, then scored each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — they are notmeasurements we took, because we don't have a lab and we're not going to pretend we do. Prices come live from the Amazon Product API; where a spec came from a manufacturer we say so and link it in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why wear a hat in the sauna?
A wool hat insulates your head so your scalp and ears don't overheat before the rest of you has warmed through. In a hot sauna your head heats fastest; slowing that down lets you stay in longer and more comfortably. It's practical, not decorative.
Do you need a sauna hat for infrared?
Usually not. Sauna hats earn their keep in hot 180F+ traditional saunas where the air overheats your head. An infrared cabin runs far cooler (around 120-140F) and heats your body rather than the room, so there's little to protect your head from. If you only use infrared, you can skip the hat.
What material is best for a sauna hat?
Wool — it insulates even when damp and tolerates the heat. Between the two common types, dense wool felt is the durable, budget classic, and finer merino is the softer, pricier upgrade. Avoid synthetics, which don't handle the heat or the sweat nearly as well.
How do you wash a wool sauna hat?
By hand. Rinse in cool water with a little mild soap, gently press out the water without wringing, reshape it while damp, and air dry away from direct heat. Never machine wash or tumble dry wool — heat and agitation shrink it.
