The Best Barrel Saunas

Six outdoor barrels ranked on wood, heater and honest capacity — with live prices, and the install costs the listings leave out.

We earn a commission when you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It never affects our rankings, and we say so when the cheaper product is the better buy. How this works.

Buy the Almost Heaven Pinnacle if you want the best barrel and can afford it, the Smartmak if you want a genuine Harvia heater for far less, or the AURGOD if your yard has no power. Those three cover almost every barrel buyer — premium, value, and off-grid.

Why a barrel, and what the shape actually does

The round profile isn't only a look. A barrel encloses less air than a square cabin of the same seating, so it heats faster and uses less energy, and the curved ceiling rolls heat back down onto the bench instead of stacking it dead against a flat roof. Barrels are also built to live outside: staves banded like a wine barrel shed rain, and the whole thing sits on cradles off the ground. That's why the barrel is the default outdoorsauna — it's an efficient shape that survives the weather.

What Amazon's barrel shelf really looks like

Be clear-eyed about the selection: it's real, but shallow. There is essentially one premium US brand — Almost Heaven — building cedar barrels with real support, and then a field of Canadian-hemlock factory kitsthat differ mostly by which heater they bundle and how big the tube is. That's not a knock; a good hemlock kit with a Harvia stove is a lot of sauna for the money. It just means the honest job of a ranking here is to separate the one genuine manufacturer from the rebadged kits, and to tell you which kit bundles a heater worth having.

The picks, in short

The Almost Heaven Pinnacle is the premium best-overall — US cedar, a real electric heater, a brand you can call. The Smartmak is the value electric barrel: a hemlock body, but it ships with a genuine 6kW Harvia, and the brand-name stove is the story. The AURGOD is the wood-burning pick, stove and chimney included, so it needs no electrical work and runs anywhere you can safely burn wood. The Almost Heaven Salemis the Pinnacle's 2-person sibling for a smaller yard; the Benovo lets you configure wood-or-electric and a size up to eight; and the Allwood 400-EHP is the big-group tube, seating up to eight with its own Harvia. Cedar or hemlock, electric or wood — those two choices decide most of it, and the electric-vs-wood comparison is the place to settle the second one.

Pros

  • Almost Heaven is a genuine US manufacturer, not a rebadged factory kit — build quality and support show it
  • Fragrant, rot-resistant cedar staves that hold up outdoors
  • Comes with a real electric heater sized for the barrel

Cons

  • The most expensive barrel here by a wide margin
  • Electric heater needs a 240V circuit and an electrician for hookup

Don't buy this if…

you're price-first. A generic Canadian-cedar kit gets you a working barrel for far less — you're paying here for US build and support.

Pros

  • Bundles a real Harvia heater — the premium heater brand — with a budget barrel body
  • Bigger capacity than the Almost Heaven 2-person for less money
  • Harvia stove means easy replacement stones and parts

Cons

  • Hemlock body, not cedar — less aroma, less natural rot resistance
  • Factory-kit build quality is a step below Almost Heaven

Don't buy this if…

you want cedar and US build quality. This trades body quality for a brand-name heater and a lower price — a fair trade, but know what you're getting.

How to actually choose a barrel sauna

Cedar vs hemlock

Wood is the first fork. Red cedar is the premium sauna stave: it's aromatic, it's naturally rot-resistant, and that resistance matters a lot for wood that lives outdoors in rain and snow. Hemlock is the value wood — clean-looking and perfectly serviceable, but with less aroma and less natural defense against moisture, so it leans harder on you keeping it sealed and dry. Here that split is also a brand split: Almost Heaven builds in US cedar, while the Smartmak, AURGOD, Benovo and Allwood are hemlock-or-Nordic factory kits. Pay for cedar if longevity and smell matter; take hemlock if you want the most barrel for the money.

Electric vs wood-burning

The second fork decides your whole install. An electric heater is thermostatic and set-and-forget — but it wants a dedicated 240V circuit and, realistically, an electrician. A wood stove needs no wiring at all, gives you the crackle-and-smoke ritual purists love, and works off-grid — but you tend it every session and it's bound by local fire codes and clearances. Convenience points to electric; ambiance and a powerless yard point to wood. The full breakdown is in electric vs wood-burning.

Capacity, honestly

A barrel's "person" count assumes people sitting upright, shoulder to shoulder. A 4-person barrel seats four for a chat; it does not let four people stretch out. Size to your real, regular use — a couple who sauna together most nights is better served by a 2-person Salem than by an 8-person Allwood they heat half-empty and pay to run. Bigger tubes are more wood to bring to temperature every single time.

The 240V reality

This is the line the listings gloss over. Every electric barrel here — Pinnacle, Salem, Smartmak, Allwood — runs on 240V, which for most homes means an electrician pulling a dedicated circuit from the panel out to the yard, plus a permit in many places. That's real money on top of the sticker, and it's the single most common surprise. If you want to skip it entirely, the wood-burning AURGOD is the way. We put numbers on all of it in the barrel cost guide.

Foundation and pad

A barrel is heavy and it must sit dead level, or the door binds and the staves stress unevenly. It cannot go straight onto grass or soft dirt. Plan on a firm, level base — pavers, a gravel pad, or a small concrete slab — sized to the cradles. It's not a big job, but it's not optional, and it belongs in your budget from the start.

How we picked

We do not run a testing lab

We researched published manufacturer specifications, listing data and aggregated owner reviews, then scored each product against a published rubric. The scores are judgments from documented research — they are notmeasurements we took, because we don't have a lab and we're not going to pretend we do. Prices come live from the Amazon Product API; where a spec came from a manufacturer we say so and link it in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is the best barrel sauna?
For most buyers, the Almost Heaven Pinnacle — a US-built, real-cedar 4-person barrel with a proper electric heater and a manufacturer you can actually get parts and support from. If it's more than you want to spend, the Smartmak hemlock barrel bundles a genuine 6kW Harvia for far less, and the wood-burning AURGOD is the pick if your yard has no power.
Are barrel saunas worth it?
If you want an outdoor sauna, yes: the round shape encloses less air than a square cabin, so it heats faster and runs on less energy, and it's built to survive the weather. The honest caveats are the install — an electric barrel needs a 240V circuit and a level pad — and that Amazon's selection is one premium US brand plus a field of hemlock factory kits, not an endless choice.
Cedar or hemlock barrel sauna?
Cedar is the premium wood — aromatic and naturally rot-resistant, which matters for a sauna that lives outdoors year-round. Hemlock is the value wood: clean and serviceable, with less aroma and less natural moisture resistance, so it needs a bit more upkeep. Almost Heaven builds in US cedar; the factory kits here are hemlock. Pay for cedar if longevity and smell matter, take hemlock for the most barrel per dollar.
Do barrel saunas need a foundation?
They need a firm, level base — not a full foundation, but not bare grass either. A heavy barrel must sit dead level or the door binds and the staves stress unevenly, so plan on pavers, a compacted gravel pad, or a small concrete slab sized to the cradles. Budget for it from the start; it's a small job but not an optional one.
