A sauna door has one non-negotiable rule: it opens outward and never locks or latches, so anyone inside can push straight out with no catch, knob-turn or effort — a genuine safety requirement in a hot room. Beyond that, the big choice is glass versus wood: glass looks modern and lets light in but transmits more heat, while wood insulates better and is heavier but hides the interior. A gap at the bottom feeds ventilation, and the handle should stay cool to the touch. It's a small component that people barely think about, yet it's where the most important safety rule of a home sauna lives. Which way a sauna door opens — always outward
This is the rule you don't break. A sauna door must swing outward, away from the hot room, and it must be openable with a simple push. The reason is safety: if someone inside feels faint, overheated or unwell, they need to get out instantly, without pulling a door inward against their own body, turning a knob, or fighting a mechanism. An outward-swinging door lets a person simply lean or fall against it and be out. It also means the door can never be blocked by a person who has collapsed against it from the inside. At most, the door is held gently shut by a simple ball catch or a magnet and a friction fit — something that keeps the heat in but yields to a push. This is deliberate and universal: a person inside, including a child, must always be able to get out on their own, and a person outside must always be able to open it to help. Glass vs wood doors
With safety settled, the real decision is the material, and it's a genuine trade-off rather than a right answer:
- Glass doors — the modern look that lets light in. A full or part-glass door makes a small sauna feel more open, lets you see in and out (reassuring if children or older relatives use it), and suits a contemporary room. The honest cost is heat: glass transmits more warmth than an insulated wood panel, so a large glass door lets a little more heat escape and can put a slightly bigger demand on the heater. It must be tempered (safety) glass — never ordinary glass — so that if it ever breaks it crumbles into blunt pieces rather than shards.
- Wood doors — better insulation, hidden interior.A solid wood door insulates better, so it holds heat in more effectively and blends into a traditional wood cabin. The trade-offs are that it's heavier (which puts more demand on the hinges), it hides the interior so you can't see in, and it makes a small room feel more enclosed. For a traditional, heat-first sauna where you want maximum efficiency and a classic look, wood is the natural pick.
Neither is "correct" — glass buys light and visibility at a small heat cost; wood buys insulation and a traditional feel at the cost of weight and a closed-in look. Many buyers land on a part-glass wood-framed door as the middle ground. Pick based on whether you value seeing in and a bright, open feel, or maximum heat retention and a classic cabin.
The gap at the bottom is intentional
If you notice a sauna door doesn't seal tight to the floor, that's by design, not a defect. A small gap at the bottom of the door is part of the sauna's ventilation — it lets fresh air into the room to feed the circulation a sauna needs to breathe and to keep the air comfortable to sit in. A sauna is not meant to be an airtight box; it needs a controlled flow of fresh air in and stale, humid air out, and the door gap is one piece of that system. So don't weatherstrip a sauna door tight to the floor to "stop drafts" — you'd be defeating part of the ventilation. Handles that stay cool
Inside a hot sauna, anything you touch has to be safe to grab, and the door handle is the thing you reach for on the way out. That's why the inside handle is almost always wood— wood barely conducts heat, so it stays cool enough to grip even when the room is at full temperature. A metal handle on the inside would get hot enough to be unpleasant or unsafe, which is exactly what you don't want on the one thing a person grabs to leave. The outside handle can be wood or metal since it's in the cool room. When you look at a door, check that the inside handle is a cool-touch material, low and easy to reach; it's a small detail that matters most in the moment you most need the door to be easy.
Hinges, self-closing and the seal
Sauna doors typically use spring or gravity hinges that gently self-closethe door, so it drifts shut on its own to hold heat in without ever latching. That gives you the best of both: the door stays closed during a session but is never held by anything you have to release. Hinges have to cope with heat and humidity, so they're corrosion-resistant, and a heavier wood door needs sturdier hinges than a light glass one — one more reason the material choice ripples outward. Around the door frame, a soft seal or a simple overlap keeps most of the heat in while still allowing the deliberate airflow the sauna needs. The aim is a door that closes itself, seals reasonably, and opens with a push — never one clamped tight.
Sizing, rough opening and the threshold
If you're building a room rather than buying a prefab cabin, the door has to be planned into the framing. You size the rough opening— the framed hole in the wall — to the door's specified dimensions plus the small allowance the manufacturer calls for, so the door and its frame fit square with room to shim and seal. Sauna doors are often a little shorter and narrower than a standard house door, which suits a compact cabin, so don't assume a normal door blank will drop in. Mind the threshold at the bottom: it should be low and easy to step over (no trip hazard on the way out), while still leaving the intentional ventilation gap.
