Sauna Safety: The Rules That Matter
Deep heat is a real physiological stress. Here's how to use a sauna safely — the hydration and alcohol rules, who should check with a doctor first, and the warning signs to respect.

A sauna is safe for most healthy adults who use it sensibly — but deep heat is a real stress on your circulation, not a neutral spa amenity. The essentials are quick: stay hydrated, never mix alcohol with the heat, keep sessions reasonable, ease in, and get out the moment you feel unwell. Some people should get medical clearance before they start at all.
The everyday rules
Most safe sauna use comes down to a handful of habits that healthy adults should follow every single time:
- Hydrate before and after.You lose a lot of water as sweat. Drink water before you go in and again when you come out, and don't start a session already thirsty or dehydrated.
- Never combine alcohol and the sauna.This is the big one. Both alcohol and deep heat lower your blood pressure, promote dehydration and load your heart, and together they can cause fainting, arrhythmia or worse. Alcohol has been implicated in sauna-related deaths. Don't drink before or during — full stop.
- Keep sessions sensible and ease in. A hot traditional sauna is typically 15-20 minutes; an infrared cabin runs cooler so sessions are longer. Beginners should start at 5-10 minutes and build up over weeks. Heat tolerance is real and grows with time — there is nothing to prove by staying in too long.
- Cool down gradually and stand up slowly. Your blood pressure can be low right after the heat, so rise slowly to avoid a head-rush, and let your body come back to normal before dressing or heading into the cold.

Who should get medical clearance first
The benefits people associate with saunas come from regular, sensible use by people for whom heat is safe — the research is not a green light for everyone. Talk to a doctor before using a sauna if any of the following apply:
- Heart disease or any known cardiovascular condition — the heat raises your heart rate and changes your blood pressure.
- Low or high blood pressure — heat can drop pressure sharply, and the swings matter if yours is already unstable.
- Pregnancy— raising core body temperature carries risks, so this needs a doctor's guidance, not a guess.
- Older adults— heat regulation and blood-pressure control change with age; lean cooler and shorter and check first if there's any condition in the mix.
- Young children— they overheat far faster than adults and can't always tell you when something's wrong. Keep sessions very short and supervised, and get pediatric advice.
- Certain medications — some affect blood pressure, heart rate, sweating or hydration. If you take regular medication, ask whether heat exposure is a concern.
Warning signs — get out immediately
Your body signals clearly when it has had enough, and none of these are things to push through. Leave the sauna, cool down and rehydrate at the first sign of:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Nausea
- A headache starting
- A racing, pounding or irregular heartbeat
- Feeling faint, confused or simply that something is off
If you feel faint, get out and lie down with your feet elevated until it passes, and don't go back in. A sauna is not an endurance contest — respecting these signals is using it correctly.
Overheating: what it looks like
The core risk of any heat exposure is simply overheating, and it's useful to know the shape of it. Early overheating shows up as the warning signs above — dizziness, nausea, a headache, a pounding heart, heavy fatigue. Push past those and it can progress to heat exhaustion (clammy skin, weakness, feeling faint) and, in the extreme, heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. You are very unlikely to get near that from a sensible session, but the way you stay clear of it is exactly the everyday rule set: reasonable session lengths, staying hydrated, easing in, avoiding alcohol, and — above all — getting out the instant you feel off rather than telling yourself you'll last another minute. If someone becomes confused, stops sweating, or can't be roused, treat it as an emergency and get help.
Hydration, in a little more depth
It's worth being specific about hydration because it's the lever you control most. You sweat out a meaningful volume of water in a session, and replacing it is what keeps your blood pressure and circulation stable. Drink water before you go in, keep some within reach, and rehydrate steadily afterward — don't wait until you're parched. If you do long or repeated rounds and sweat heavily, plain water plus your normal meals is usually plenty for a healthy adult; there's no need for anything exotic. What you should not do is treat the sauna as a place to "sweat out" water weight on purpose, or use it while already dehydrated from exercise, heat or a night out — that's how an ordinary session turns into a lightheaded one.
Don't sauna alone if you have a condition, and supervise kids
Two situational rules worth stating plainly. First, if you have any medical condition that could cause you to faint or need help, don't use a sauna alone — have someone within earshot who knows you're in there. Second, children should always be supervised, kept to very short sessions at lower temperatures, and pulled out at the first sign of discomfort, because they overheat quickly and may not recognize or report the warning signs themselves.
Infrared vs traditional: the safety differences
The two main sauna types share the same core precautions, with one practical difference. A traditional sauna runs hot — 150-195F — so the risks of overheating and a sharp blood-pressure drop come on faster, and shorter sessions matter more. An infrared cabinruns cooler at 120-140F, which many people find gentler and easier to tolerate, so sessions can run longer at a lower intensity. Cooler is not the same as risk-free, though: you still sweat heavily and still need to hydrate, avoid alcohol and watch for the same warning signs. The rules don't change; the traditional sauna just reaches the edge sooner.
Keeping EMF worry in proportion
Infrared saunas sometimes attract worry about electromagnetic fields (EMF) from the heating panels. It's worth keeping in proportion. Reputable manufacturers publish low-EMF designs and measurements, and the levels involved are generally comparable to everyday household appliances. Basic electrical safety
A sauna is an electrical appliance in a hot, sometimes damp environment, so the install matters. Plug-in infrared cabins run on a standard outlet and are straightforward, but anything needing a dedicated 240V circuit — most traditional heaters and larger cabins — should be wired by a qualified electrician, on the correct circuit and breaker, often with a permit and inspection. Don't improvise high-current wiring, keep the heater's clearances and guard in place so nothing flammable touches it, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Done properly, the electrical side is a one-time job you never think about again.

Saunas are safe for most healthy adults, and the encouraging research on regular use assumes sensible, regular sessions— not marathon sits, not alcohol, and not ignoring your body.
