Step 1: Size the kW to your room (this is the big one)

The single most important number is the heater's power rating against the volume of your sauna. The long-standing rule of thumb is roughly 1 kW for every 45 cubic feet of well-insulated sauna, adjusted upward for cold exterior walls, large glass doors or windows, or uninsulated surfaces, which all bleed heat. Measure your room's length × width × height, and use that as your starting point rather than guessing. Step 2: Electric or wood-burning

Almost all home sauna heaters are electric, and for good reason: they're simple, controllable, need no chimney, and suit indoor rooms. Step 4: Controls — built-in or external

Heaters come with the controls on the unit itself (built-in knobs, cheaper and simpler) or with a separate wall-mounted controller (often digital, with a timer and pre-set scheduling). Built-in is perfectly good for a straightforward setup; an external controller is nicer if you want to set a timer so the sauna is hot when you arrive, or if reaching a hot unit to adjust it is awkward.
