A built-in control (a knob and thermostat on the heater itself) is simplest and cheapest and suits most small home saunas; an external control (a separate wall panel or app) adds pre-heat timers, remote start and finer temperature setting, and is worth it for larger rooms or if you want to warm the sauna before you walk out to it. Neither is "better" — it's about your room size and how you want to run it. The two control types
Built-in (integrated) controlsput the thermostat and timer knobs directly on the heater. You turn a dial to set temperature and, on timed models, a second dial to set the run time. It's simple, reliable, and it's how most compact home heaters ship — the value 240V stoves and many barrel and small-cabin kits use this. External controls separate the brains from the heater: a control unit mounts on the wall (usually outside the hot room) or connects over WiFi to an app, and it drives the heater. Why the control type is tied to heater size
There's a practical reason bigger heaters tend to use external controls. Higher-kW heaters draw more current than a wall thermostat can safely switch, so above a certain size the control has to be a separate unit (or a contactor-based setup) rather than a knob on the heater. In rough terms, small heaters for compact rooms commonly offer a built-in control, while larger heaters for bigger rooms more often require or recommend an external controller. What each control gives you
- Thermostat. Both types have one — it holds the room at your set temperature. The difference is granularity: external panels often set more precisely.
- Timer / auto-off. Essential for safety. A timer shuts the heater off after a set period so it never runs unattended. Built-in timers are common; external ones add scheduling.
- Pre-heat scheduling.The headline external-control feature: set the sauna to warm up on a schedule or start it remotely, so it's hot when you arrive rather than after a 30-45 minute wait.
- Remote / app control. WiFi controllers let you start the sauna from your phone — genuinely useful if the sauna is a walk away, in a basement, or outdoors.
Which should you choose?
For a small indoor or barrel sauna you'll switch on when you're next to it, a built-in control is perfectly good — simple, cheaper, one less thing to wire, and nothing to go wrong. Choose an external or WiFi controlif your heater is large enough to require it, if the sauna is far enough from where you live in the house that pre-heating remotely saves you real waiting, or if you simply want the convenience of a hot sauna on a schedule. The honest test: if you'll always be right there to turn it on and wait, built-in is fine; if you'd rather it be warm when you get to it, pay for external. Installation and wiring
The control type affects the install. A built-in control is wired as part of the heater. An external controller adds a control unit and the low-voltage sensor and wiring that link it to the heater, mounted per the manufacturer's instructions — more parts, and more reason to have it done properly.
