What "phase" even means

Phase describes how the electrical supply delivers power. A typical North American home has single-phase service: it can provide 120V for outlets and 240V for big appliances like a dryer, range or sauna heater. It's standard in commercial and industrial buildings, and uncommon in houses. Large heaters — commonly 10kW and above, for big or commercial rooms — are often offered in (or require) a three-phase version to spread that heavy load. Some larger models come in both single- and three-phase variants, and you pick to match your supply. The catch for homeowners: if a heater needs three-phase and your house is single-phase (as most are), bringing three-phase service in is a major, expensive utility and electrical project — usually a sign you should choose a heater that runs single-phase instead. For nearly every home sauna, that's the better answer than upgrading the service.

How to check which you have — and need

  • Your building: a licensed electrician can confirm your service in minutes at the panel. The vast majority of houses are single-phase; three-phase is mostly commercial units and some larger or older buildings.
  • The heater:the listing and manual state the phase and voltage, and often the required circuit/breaker size. Read it before you buy — a heater's phase is not something you can change with an adapter.
  • The match: the two have to agree. A three-phase heater will not run on single-phase service, and vice versa. When in doubt, buy the single-phase model for a home.
