If you have a traditional electric or wood rock stove, a heater guard is strongly worth it — the exterior of the stove and the stones get hot enough to burn on contact, and a guard is a simple wooden rail that stops anyone brushing against it. Infrared cabins don't need one; their panels run far cooler. A heater guard (or safety rail) is one of the most overlooked pieces of sauna safety, precisely because the risk feels obvious until someone slips or reaches out in a small, hot room. Here's when it matters and how it fits into the wider picture.
What a heater guard actually is
It's a low wooden fence or rail — usually matching the sauna's wood — that surrounds the hot heater, holding people a safe distance from the casing and the stones. It doesn't reduce the heat; it just makes accidental contact much harder. Think of it as the barrier between a bare hot surface and a bench full of relaxed (and sometimes unsteady) people in a cramped space. Many heaters offer a matching guard as an accessory, and some rooms build a simple one in.
Why the burn risk is real
A traditional sauna heater runs its rock basket to several hundred degrees, and the metal casing gets very hot too. In a small room people move around, step in and out, and occasionally lose their footing on a wet floor — and an outstretched hand or a brushed shin against a hot stove causes a serious burn instantly. The people most at risk are the ones least able to react: children, older bathers, and anyone who's had a drink (which you should never combine with a sauna anyway). Guard vs clearance — two different things
These get confused, so to be clear: a heater guard protects people from touching the hot stove. Clearances protect the building— the minimum distances the manufacturer and code require between the heater and combustible walls, benches and ceiling. You need to respect both, and they're separate requirements. When you need one — and when you don't
- Fit a guard if you have a traditional rock stove (electric or wood), especially in a household with children or older users, a floor-standing heater people pass close to, or a small room where the bench sits near the stove.
- Check the manual:some heaters recommend or effectively require a guard, and many sell a matching one. Follow the manufacturer's guidance first.
- You can skip it ifyou run an infrared cabin — the panels operate at a much lower surface temperature and aren't a contact-burn hazard the way a rock stove is. (You still keep normal cabin sense, but there's no glowing stove to rail off.)
The honest bottom line
A heater guard is cheap insurance against a genuinely nasty injury, and for a traditional stove it's one of the few sauna accessories that's about safety rather than comfort.
