Do Infrared Saunas Need Special Wiring?

Most 1-2 person far-infrared cabins run on a standard 120V household outlet with no special wiring — you plug them in like a large appliance. Larger 3-4 person cabins and full-spectrum models usually need a dedicated 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician. So the honest answer is: it depends on the cabin's size and heater type, and the manual tells you which camp yours is in before you buy.

The common case: a standard 120V outlet

The great majority of small home infrared saunas — the 1-person and 2-person far-infrared cabins that make up most of the market — plug straight into an ordinary 120V wall outlet. There's no rewiring, no electrician and no permit for the electrical side; that's a big part of their appeal and the reason they can go almost anywhere in a home. The one caveat is the circuit behind that outlet. A far-infrared cabin pulls a meaningful, steady load while it heats, so it's best on its own dedicated 15A or 20A circuit — or at least a circuit that isn't already feeding a big draw like a microwave, space heater or window air conditioner. Sharing with a heavy load is how you trip a breaker mid-session. Check the manual for the cabin's amperage draw and match it to the circuit; if you're not sure what else is on that circuit, that's the thing worth confirming before delivery. Check the amperage against the circuit

The number that matters is the cabin's current draw in amps, listed in the manual or on the spec plate. A typical 1-2 person far-infrared cabin sits comfortably within a standard 15A or 20A household circuit, but you want headroom, not a cabin that maxes the breaker out. The rule of thumb electricians use is to keep a continuous load under about 80% of the circuit's rating, which is exactly why a dedicated circuit is the clean answer — nothing else is competing for the amps. If the listed draw is close to your circuit's limit, or you'd be sharing with other appliances, treat that as a sign to give the cabin its own circuit rather than hoping it fits.

No extension cords, no power strips

Whatever the cabin's draw, plug it directly into the wall outlet. Extension cords and power strips are a genuine fire risk with a sustained heating load: they add resistance, can overheat, and most aren't rated for a continuous high-current appliance. This is one of the few hard-and-fast electrical rules with infrared cabins, and most manuals state it explicitly. If the outlet isn't where you want the cabin, the right fix is to have an electrician add an outlet in the right spot — not to bridge the gap with a cord. When you do need 240V and an electrician

The exceptions are the bigger and hotter cabins. Larger 3-4 person infrared saunas, and most full-spectrum cabins that add near- and mid-infrared heat on top of far-infrared, draw more power than a 120V circuit can supply — so they're wired for a dedicated 240V circuit, the same class of connection as an electric dryer or range. That is a job for a licensed electrician, and in most places it needs a permit and inspection. How to know before you buy

Don't guess — the listing and the manual state the power requirement plainly. Look for the voltage (120V or 240V), the amperage draw, and any line about a dedicated circuit. If it says 120V and gives an amp figure within a standard circuit, it's a plug-in cabin and you're done. If it says 240V, budget for an electrician and a permit as part of the purchase, and factor that into the total cost. Sorting this out before delivery is far easier than discovering on setup day that your cabin needs a circuit you don't have.
