The garage is the most underrated spot for a home sauna.It usually has the two things a sauna wants most — a concrete floor that shrugs off moisture and physical room to spare — and the electrical panel is frequently on the same wall, which shortens the most expensive part of the job. Whether you are dropping in a prefab cabin or building a room, the garage is often the path of least resistance. Here is how to convert one properly, and the handful of things that go wrong when people don't.
Why the garage wins
Three advantages stack up. First, the concrete floor: unlike a carpeted spare room or a finished basement, a garage slab handles the water and humidity of a sauna without complaint, and it makes drainage simple. Second, space — a garage can usually take a 2- or 3-person cabin with clearance to spare, and still park a car or store the usual clutter around it. Third, proximity to power: the main panel or a subpanel is often in the garage, which means the dedicated 240V circuit a traditional sauna needs is a short, cheaper run. Add a prefab cabin and a garage conversion can be one of the least disruptive ways to get a real sauna into a house.
Power: the first question, and an electrician's job
Start here, because it can make or break the whole plan. A traditional rock-stove cabin needs a dedicated 240V circuit sized to its heater; an infrared cabin may run on a standard outlet, but even then it wants its own circuit rather than sharing with the garage door opener and the freezer. Have a licensed electrician confirm your panel has capacity and run the circuit — this is safety-critical work in a space that will get humid, not a DIY corner. Insulation and the cold-garage problem
Here is the garage's one real weakness: most are uninsulated, and an uninsulated space fights your heater every session — slower to warm, more expensive to run, and in winter it may struggle to reach temperature at all. A prefab cabin sidesteps most of this, because the cabin is its own insulated box; you are heating the cabin, not the garage. If you are building a room rather than dropping in a cabin, proper insulation with a foil vapor barrier on the warm side is non-negotiable — it is what keeps the heat in and, critically, keeps moisture out of the wall cavity where it would cause rot. Do not skip the vapor barrier; trapped moisture in an uninsulated garage wall is exactly the failure mode to design out.
Ventilation and moisture management
A sauna makes heat and, if it is traditional, steam — and that moisture has to be managed even in a forgiving concrete space. A prefab cabin handles its own internal ventilation; your job is to make sure the garage itself can shed humidity so it does not condense on cold tools, the car or the walls. A little cross-ventilation, or simply cracking the garage door for a while after a session, goes a long way. For a built room, proper intake-and-exhaust ventilation is part of the design, per general building practice (NFPA). The concrete floor makes the drainage side easy — water goes down, not into a subfloor.
Clearances, siting and the car
Position the cabin with the clearances the manufacturer specifies around the heater and the walls, and leave room to open the door fully and walk at least one side. Think about the car: many garage saunas share the space with a vehicle, so site the cabin where it does not block the bay, and remember that a hot cabin and a cold car exhaust do not want to be nose to nose. Keep the cabin away from stored fuel, paint and other combustibles — a garage often stores exactly the things you want well clear of a heat source.
Permits: don't skip the phone call
As with any sauna install, whether you need a permit depends on where you live and on the electrical work involved — and a garage conversion often does trigger the electrical permit at minimum. Call your local building department before you start, describe the cabin and the circuit, and get the answer in writing.
